Draco and Harry in America
[info]summermoonpaint wrote in [info]accio_hd_fics
Could some please help? There was a fic, where all of the wizarding schools had a student exchange. Harry and Draco signed up for different reasons, hoping to get away from each other, I think. But, Dumbledore and all of his wisdom, sends them both to an American wizarding school. They room in a suite with two Americans. Eventually Harry and Draco get together and they play room switch with their roommates, because they are together, too.

Help?

Chinese vs. Japanese Hanzi/Kanji Readings
[info]lucky_ninja wrote in [info]little_details
Setting: AU mashup of personalities from the Three Kingdoms Era (China, 184 to 220 CE) and the Sengoku era (Japan, 1467-1573 CE).
Searches: I looked up the hanzi in question in Wiktionary, which is a good resource but didn't entirely help me for reasons I'll explain in a minute.

Character X references his strategist by one the strategist's (canonical) nicknames, which in (Mandarin) Chinese is Fúlóng - . My question is, how would these characters be read in Japanese, so my problem(s):

A) I'm stuck on whether or not on or kun readings would most appropriate.
B) Given whether on or kun would be most likely, according to Wiktionary both characters have a couple of different options for both the former and the latter, so I'm also stuck on which kun or on would be best.

Thank you. =D

Keeping character hydrated in a frontier setting
[info]moon_custafer wrote in [info]little_details
In an 1870s American frontier situation, a character’s wound gets infected – I’ve tried to make the sepsis mild enough for him to plausibly pull through, since I just need to keep my doctor character busy till the wee hours looking after him. My question is this – as I understand it, in a modern hospital the main treatment for this would be an iv line to keep him hydrated – obviously my characters haven’t got that, so I assume they’ll be giving him liquids by mouth – what would they most likely give him? My gut says *very* watered-down whiskey/brandy (more like water with a few drops of whiskey in it) – I’m always afraid to give anyone plain water in a historical setting, and most of the period novels I’ve read have the doctors giving patients small doses of alcohol as “a stimulant,” but I don’t want to mess up. For what it’s worth, the water used by the doctor to soak the wound and re-clean it after drainage was boiled and had a bit of iodine added, but I doubt the patient would be willing to drink that.

If this is too difficult, I can give the character a different illness, I really just need him in order to keep the doctor on the spot.

Thanks!

FIC: Minerva/Alastor -- "Liars" by DaphneRunning

Title: Liars
Author: DaphneRunning (LJ is under a different name that seems to be kept separate from fanfic)
Word Count: 22,650
Alternate Links to Fic/Art: none
Pairing: Minerva McGonagall / Alastor Moody
Rating: NC-17
Author's Website: Her page at FFN
Why everyone should read this: Because of how long it will stay with you. It's not a perfect story (the opening is abrupt, and the initial motivations are a little murky), but it's very powerful. The author pulled me so thoroughly into her vision of the characters that by the time I finished reading, I had a hard time seeing them any other way. I'm fascinated by how she does it: as she presents them, neither Alastor nor Minerva is very likeable: they dislike and use each other, treat each other brutally at times. Yet gradually, and quite believably, their feelings to turn to something else -- definitely not your standard romantic love, but love all the same. Our feelings toward the characters change, too; we come to care for and understand them despite their flaws. And the ending! -- it's a total punch in the gut, even though you know it's coming. I felt a sense of genuine loss.

Why this must be read: In one word - angst. A post TS by BS two part story, written with shattering insight and glittering precision, we get to see Blair in a new career as a grant writer, and in his true calling of 'teacher'. Then we are brought inside Jim during his reconstruction and reincarnation and in his search for his 'Chief'. Show Me More of This Traken Thing Called Kissing by Doyle (PG-13)

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Nyssa/Tegan
Length: 5100 words
Author on LJ: [info]doyle_sb4
Author Website: Doyle's fic at A Teaspoon and an Open Mind
Why this must be read:

Because it's adorable, with absolutely spot on characterisation for everybody that will make you nostalgic for the dysfunctional time-travelling family dynamics of the Fifth Doctor Era. And the Nyssa/Tegan romance is lovely and well developed.

This time they really did get to Heathrow.

In 1666.

There were Terileptils.

Nyssa sat on her own bed while Tegan unpacked, and she was trying so hard to look sympathetic instead of pleased that eventually Tegan came over and hugged her and said, “Yes, all right, I'm not completely sorry to be staying.”

Nyssa was soft and pleasant against her.

“But don't say a word to the Doctor.”

A time for fun and a time for work
[info]yourlibrarian
It's exciting to see contributions surging into the Archive of Our Own now that open beta has begun. I have hopes for the archive being a one-stop, highly searchable site for all kinds of fan content. LJ and its clones may be really good blogging/interaction sites but they're lousy for actually finding things. And unlike the Buffyverse, SPN fandom is not rife with archives.

Speaking of one-stop shops for fannish content, in case others weren't aware of it, Clicker.com is a search engine for finding places to see TV content online. Just type in the show you want to see and it'll show what episodes are available and where. You can also create playlists.

I was boggled today when I read this article about men, women and power at work. Funny how the entire thing is written to demonstrate how men are merely well meaning but baffled and women are always at fault for creating problems at work. Case in point:

"“Men often seem to think (heroically) that they should be masters at the conversation–that they should know the ‘right’ things to say.” His advice to men and women: “Be more curious about each other and their experiences."

It's heroic to be self-centered and domineering in a conversation! Who knew?

"Meanwhile, women’s tendency to be super-serious (as men perceive them, at least) compounds the workplace dysfunction. “Women can make anything a chore,” a former Microsoft executive told me. “They’re too serious and don’t seem to understand that work is a game.”"

It's wrong to be serious about serious matters! Now there's a rather fitting explanation for why our economy's in the state it's in. I look forward to the way men will turn unemployment into a game.

The prompts are suggestions, and if they're not helpful to you, ignore them. If they give you an idea that's entirely contrary to and opposite of what I asked, why, do that instead!

What I like best, hm... I like short fic. I like PWP. I like experimental stuff. But if you tend to write long, plotty, traditional fiction, I'll take it! I like humor, weird humor, angst, and sap. I’m not really big on dark fic, but! If that’s what you write, go for it. What’s Christmastime without a little darkness?

I like smut. A lot.

Other than that, I really have few absolute squicks. It all depends on what the writer does with it, is my philosophy. So tie 'em down, knock 'em up, kill 'em off, give 'em wings! Well, maybe not all in one story. 8-)

Have fun & see you on the flip side!

ART REC: Harry/Ginny - Sunlit Days, by thanfiction

Title: Sunlit Days
Artist: [info]thanfiction
Rating: NC-17 - Not too graphic, but NSFW either.
Pairing: Harry/Ginny
Artist's Website: [info]thanart or his gallery at DeviantArt.
Why you chose this piece: The artist's choice of black marker and pencil create a stark and lovely piece. The contrasts of dark and light, such as the inky mountains in the background and the whiteness of Ginny's thigh, are just beautiful. And check out Harry's cloak--the illusion of transparency is so perfect, allowing us to be voyeurs and see this very private moment.

Here's another in one of my very, very occasional series of transcripts of the official commentaries from the 'Buffy' DVDs - or in this case, from the 'Angel ' DVDs. It's an exception because I was given a specific request to make this the next commentary I transcribed - so here it is.

As before, I've reproduced it as faithfully as possible, but left out verbal tics like "like" and "you know " and "sort of". Also, I sometimes found it hard to tell which of the two men were speaking, so I used my best judgement to assign each line to the right person. If you spot any errors please let me know.

Why you chose this piece: Because it's such a great concept, pulling characters from one universe into another; this painting is the definition of what a crossover is. Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of those shows that I have on my 'to-watch list', and even though there are technically no Harry Potter characters in this painting I still enjoyed it.

Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Kakashi/Iruka, Naruto/Sasuke
Length: 21,037 words
Author on LJ: I don't think she has one
Author Website: @ FF.net
Why this must be read:

I like stories that give new insight into familiar characters. In Naruto fic, the possibilities are endless. With a cast of hundreds, a good author can keep a reader amazed without OCing. With Kept Secret, Sunlight through Leaves gives you another view of life in the Hidden Leaf village, a wonderful new take on a seemingly simple and sincere school teacher, and and a puzzle even an ex-ANBU sensei finds irresistible.

And if you enjoy Kept Secret, Also give Touchstone a try. Sunlight Through Leaves is a definite Iruka fan and it shows in all her writing. She brings him to three-dimensional life so much better than the manga without ignoring all the characteristics that make him great. She's a delight.

But definitely try Kept Secret. And don't forget to leave feedback.

Pairing: None. Friendship fic, although could be seen as pre-slash (K/M)
Rating: R for content: language, mentions of past abuse.
Word count: 50,000+ (this chapter: 2,500)

Summary: McCoy finds that his new role as CMO gives him new information about Jim's past, and new responsibility for his welfare. Takes place right after the movie ends. Mostly this is an in-depth psychological profile of Jim as he develops into his role as Captain, but also looks at how the crew (McCoy, Spock, Pike, Uhura, Chapel, etc.) come to see him. Prequel to Lead Me To Your Door.

This chapter: Jim takes command, but things don't go exactly as planned.

Memory Derails Intention (Back to the Bones Edition)
[info]julia_here
I was going to put more pictures up on Saturday, but the WSU alumni Magazine was in the mail when I came home from shopping, and I ended up side tracked by memory of the bones lab, thanks to an article about Grover Krantz and his Irish Wolfhound Clyde much like this one. It shook me more than I expected it would, not with grief, again, but rather with a sense of something like triumph, on his behalf, and a cascade of memories of a time and place when Grover was a tall landmark in my daily round.

One of the stories Grover told on himself was about unpacking his collection when he first came to Pullman, chatting with one of the other faculty members- Richard Daugherty, a Northwesternist Archaeologist best known for the Ozette Village excavation- who asked him in the course of conversation "Do you have any children?" Grover leaned over and rummaged under the table and brought out a box of archaeological bones and said "sure, here's some." It always elicited a range of laughs; mine was more of the polite-laugh-learned-at-family-dinners sort. It was his firm belief that the value of bones was in their ability to pass on knowledge of the life the individual lad lived, and the cause of their death; he died of a particularly quick-killing sort of pancreatic cancer and it left no marks that I can see.

I look at the pictures of his bones, and those of Clyde, and remember the picture upon which the Smithsonian reconstruction was based sitting behind Clyde's skull on the bookcase in Grover's midcentury modern great room. Think about his vocal belief that dead is dead and bones are bones and try to work out why he kept Clyde's bones and later those of Icky-Icabod (another Wolfhound who came into Grover's life at Christmas break my first year at WSU, and who was my friend then, too, through his babyhood and adolescence) and Yahoo's, and demanded they be kept with his in the osteology collections. This was a man so skeptical he refused to commit to agnosticism, who fought the Native American Burials Act with a conviction that it would destroy the scientific understanding of the peopling of the Western Hemisphere (a conviction I did not and do not share). Leaving his own body to science- to the Bone Farm and ultimately the Smithsonian- was consistent with that- but asking to be kept with his dogs? What does that amount to?

One of the memories that keeps coming back is Grover's voice, deep and rich, and his utter control of the lecture hall. I suspect the best teachers are almost always touched with narcissism or histrionic personality disorder, and revel in the spotlight; I know that being on-stage in a Smithsonian exhibition with Clyde is something Grover would have considered a perfect ending. I also, though, remember the only time I heard him really laugh, seated in the dark between me and my friend Kjerstie, his TA, watching "Young Frankenstein;" the smothered snickers that started in the lecture-hall scene suddenly became a full-throated guffaw when Frau Blutcher finally confesses "He vas my boyfriend!"

Julia, I remember more of what he taught me, and have used it more, than anything else in that time of my life.
